THE LAB.SESSIONS #11 - JULIANA FERNANDES

VENUE

THE LAB.YRINTH SPACE

DATE

To mark World Dance Day, we opened our space to Juliana Fernandes' movement.

On 29 April, the Viana-born artist presented her latest performance piece - a raw exploration of the body and space.

‘em quanto espero’ (while I wait) is about the unsettling moment between x and y, the waiting and the feeling of what the future will bring. It is about the temporal void that sometimes occupies so much of our lives.

To the sound of José Valente's music and Manuel Brásio's sound design, Juliana shares a fragment of her personal experience and her desire for a curious gaze, without a fixed goal. For the oscillating sensation of the wind, without worries.

At the beginning of the performance, a text is handed out, which can only be read at the end. The moment of waiting is imposed, but at the same time, interest in the unknown is created and even a more attentive gaze is provided, seeking possible answers.

Juliana Fernandes, an artist from Viana born in 1996. She holds a degree in Dance from the Escola Superior de Dança, Lisbon (2017) and a postgraduate degree in Contemporary Dance from ESMAE, Porto (2022).

In 2018, she moved to Torres Vedras, where she completed her professional training as a performer and creator (2020) at Performact, remaining the following year as an integral part of the organisation and production of the course, and as a teacher and choreographer. In 2021, she co-created and directed the Lethes em Bruto Festival in Viana do Castelo, as well as the AN-TRE contemporary dance training programme, which has since been running between Viana do Castelo and Porto. She co-created, with Victor Gomes, ‘Na ausência de Ternura’ (which is currently part of the Palcos Instáveis 2a Casa programme), and ‘Blueprint’, both co-productions of the Instável Centro Coreográfico and the Teatro Municipal do Porto.

She currently resides in the city of Porto, where she has been developing her work as a creator and performer, as well as a teacher of contemporary dance, creative dance, and improvisation at various institutions and schools.
